Through the generosity of a Civil Engineering graduate of The University of Manitoba, Mr. G. Duncan Black, a graduation thesis prize is to be offered annually in memory of his brother Lt. James Wallace Black, (Lord Strathcona Horse), a former Engineering student killed in action in Italy in 1944. Starting in the year 2000, the award will be valued at 75 percent of the available annual income from the fund, rounded down to the nearest $25.
The prize will be awarded for the graduation thesis adjudged best in the Civil group by reason of:
(a) recommendation by the examining professor as a suitability for prize competition;
(b) grading obtained;
(c) committee selection.
The prize selection committee shall consist of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering and two other members of the Civil department selected by the department Chairman.
To be eligible for the prize, the thesis must be submitted by April 10th of the year of graduation.
The donor will notify the University before September 15th each year as to the availability of funds for the prize award in the ensuing session.
