Art Worth Railway Engineering Conference Award
Description:
Funds for this award have been set up in memory of Arthur (Art) Willmott Worth. The purpose of the award is to provide travel support to students interested in pursuing a career in the railway industry who wish to attend annual railway engineering conferences.

Each year from 2017/18 - 2020/21, up to two awards totaling $2,500 will be offered to University of Manitoba students who:

(1) are enrolled as either:
(a) full-time (minimum 80% course load) in the Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical & Computer Engineering degree program;
or
(b) full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a Master's or doctoral program in the Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical & Computer Engineering degree program;

(2) if an undergraduate student, has completed a minimum of 36 credit hours;

(3) have achieved:
(a) if an undergraduate student, a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0;
(b) if a graduate student, a minimum grade point average of 3.5 based on the previous 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study;

(4) have demonstrated participation or involvement/interest in the railway industry;
and
(5) have shown evidence of leadership and extracurricular involvement.

Preference will be given to members of the University of Manitoba American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) Student Chapter.

Eligible candidates are required to provide:
(i) a written statement (maximum 500 words) to demonstrate how they have met the criteria (4) and (5),
and
(ii) a brief outline of expenses for the duration of the conference (followed by the submission of receipts for travel, conference registration, food and hotel upon return from the conference).

If there are no suitable candidates who meet all of the selection criteria, the award will not be offered during that academic year.

The selection committee will have the discretion to determine the number and the value of awards (based on the travel expenses per student and the available funding). Expenses will be reimbursed up to the value of the award offered.
